North Causeway project underway

Washington Street Streetscape
Washington Street in New Smyrna Beach’s Historic Westside Community has gotten a facelift. The streetscape project has provided a new street surface, sidewalks, drainage, railroad crossing, streetlights and trees for the section of Washington between U.S. 1 and Myrtle Avenue. Community residents participated in the coordination of the project’s design, which includes a two-way traffic pattern for the street, sidewalks on both sides of the street and landscaping. The project is scheduled for completion in early September and is funded through the County of Volusia County and the City of New Smyrna Beach, through the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

Meetings on proposed CRA
Four public meetings were held August 8 to begin development of the master plan for a proposed Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The map for the proposed CRA is significantly different than the current CRA. For example, no beachside areas are included. However, the area includes much of U.S. 1 from just north of the airport to the City’s southern city limits, all of the Historic Westside Community within the city limits, the airport and airport industrial park, the Florida East Coast Railway property south of Canal Street and west of US 1, and portions of West Canal Street including the former Kmart shopping center. The draft master plan will be reviewed at another public meeting to be scheduled in about two months. The City’s current CRA will end in 2015, and an application for a new CRA is scheduled to be submitted to the Volusia County Council for approval at the end of this year.

New construction on Canal Street
Previously a vacant lot since 2008, the property at 426 Canal Street now is home to a new two story building. Signs on the building indicate first floor space already has been leased. The site once housed a McCrory five and dime store that caught on fire and had to be demolished. Designated as an “Opportunity Site” by the CRA, the project has received funding from the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

Mary Ave Playground
Historic Westside Community members soon will enjoy new restrooms at the Mary Avenue Playground. Old playground equipment also has been replaced with new apparatus. The playground is scheduled to open in early September. The project was funded by the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through the City’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA).
