Esther Street Beachfront Park nears completion
Work on Esther Street Beachfront Park is in the final months of construction. Pavilions and restrooms are in place. Stormwater improvements and parking lot construction nearly are complete. The park entrance will be widened and paved. When opened in mid-March, park amenities will include off-beach parking, a playground, walking trails, pavilions, restroom facilities, volleyball area, reconstructed seawall and a wooden dune walkover. The total projected cost of the project is nearly $1.7 million and is funded jointly by the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through its Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the City's general fund.

Renovations planned for former
Badcock Building

The CRA will play an integral role in the revitalization of a key commercial building on one of the busiest traffic corners in the city. The Commission has approved a nearly $475,000 Opportunity Site grant to renovate the former 15,500-square-foot Badcock Building, which has been vacant for more than six years. When the project is complete, the site is expected to serve as a gateway to the downtown historic district. A medical office, retail space and potentially a restaurant are planned for the space that will undergo a million- dollar facelift. Tenants could open their doors by the end of the year.

Washington Street Streetscape Project breaks ground
New Smyrna Beach and Volusia County elected officials broke ground on the newest streetscape project in New Smyrna Beach's Historic Westside Community. The project will enhance the roadway, pedestrian access, stormwater system, and lighting along the .26 mile roadway from Myrtle Avenue to U.S. 1. The nearly $1.4 million cost of the project is funded by the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through the City's Community Redevelopment Agency and includes design, construction within the Washington Street right of way and railway crossing improvements. The project is scheduled for completion in June.

Salty Dunes Coastal Kitchen opens on Flagler Avenue
The beachside's Flagler Avenue has another restaurant offering patio dining. Salty Dunes Coastal Kitchen has opened at 216 Flagler Avenue. The previously vacant space next to the Hampton Inn Beachside has been renovated to include 40 seats of indoor/outdoor dining and is expected to create as many as 20 jobs. Owners received a $20,000 CRA grant to be applied toward the $49,000 cost of the project.
