Flagler Avenue Boardwalk Project completed
New Smyrna Beach and Volusia County elected officials recently cut the ceremonial ribbon on a beachfront parking lot at one of the most popular beach access ramps in the County. Initiated in October 2011, the project included the repair of an existing seawall, repair of an existing pavilion, a brick courtyard with new stainless steel railing, construction of a new restroom building and showers, and parking lot enhancements. Landscaping, an irrigation system, and compliant lighting also were installed.

The total estimated cost of the project, including design and construction, was $1.3 million and was funded jointly by the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through the City’s CRA.

Two sites added to priority list
At its August meeting, the CRA board added two new sites to its priority list for redevelopment by defining them as “opportunity sites.” With this designation, applicants are eligible for large grants and redevelopment incentives. The sites are 248 N. Causeway and 155 Washington Street. Projects have been proposed for both sites. With the latest additions, the CRA has a list of 14 designated opportunity sites.

Esther Street Beachfront Park improvements
With the reconstruction of the seawall and dune walkover complete, the third phase of improvements to Esther Street Beachfront Park is underway. Phase III includes off-beach parking, a playground, walking trails, pavilions, restrooms, and a volleyball area. Drainage facilities for the beachfront site will reduce flooding in the North Atlantic Avenue area. The projected cost of phase III is estimated at $1 million and is scheduled for completion by January 2013. The project is funded jointly by the County of Volusia and the City of New Smyrna Beach through the City’s CRA.

Draft budget for Fiscal Year 2013
The funding for opportunity site grants and marketing and promotion of events will decrease by nearly 50 percent in next year’s CRA budget. With $540,000 proposed for all grant programs next year, applicants in the Opportunity Site category are vying for funds to assist with projects that include a proposed restaurant, a bed and breakfast, and an assisted-living facility. Several other applicants also have expressed interest in other grant programs. Additionally, external groups are hoping to garner marketing and promotional funds for events held within the NSB Waterfront LOOP. Members of the public are encouraged to attend meetings where the FY ’13 budget will be discussed. They include the CRA Board meeting at 5 p.m., Tuesday, September 11, and a special meeting of the City Commission at 5 p.m., Wednesday, September 12. Both meetings will be held in City Commission Chambers, 210 Sams Avenue, New Smyrna Beach.

‘Foodies’ may ride free shuttle August 31
The popularity of the free LOOP park and ride shuttle has New Smyrna Beach again offering the service -- this time for the August 31 Food Truck Bazaar along Flagler Avenue. The shuttle will tote LOOP-goers from 5-9 p.m. between Flagler Avenue and the parking lot at 160 North Causeway (adjacent to the North Causeway boat ramp). During the Bazaar, the mobile cafes will serve an array of gourmet food including barbecue, ethnic delicacies, sandwiches, seafood, and desserts. Chefs will offer cuisine from 5-8:30 p.m. For more information, please call 386.424.2175.
